Not all extension cords are created equal. At Christmas time usually you’ll have out those smaller extension cords for your Christmas tree or Christmas lights. These are 16 gauge extension cord‘s, they are very thin and are not intended for appliances like vacuum cleaners. Luckily these new 16 gauge extension cords have started coming with fuses, That way if you’re tempted to plug-in something like a vacuum cleaner it’s going to blow the fuse. You may say that’s not fair why didn’t work why is it not working. The good thing is this fuse did it’s job.If you want to plug-in something like a vacuum cleaner you could use a large extension cord like a 14 gauge extension cord. I know the number doesn’t make sense that 14 gauge is thicker than 16 gauge, but that’s the way it is. 12 gauge extension cord is even thicker. 12 gauge wire is actually the same gauge wire that is in your outlets in your house. If you are buying extension cords do yourself a favor and only by 12 gauge extension cord’s. If you buy a 14 gauge you really have to understand how to use it or you will burn it out just like you would to 16 gauge.
